He loved that experience, adapting well to the culture and becoming fluent in the language, which would serve him well all his life.

After receiving a diploma from the American School in Japan (Tokyo), Joel attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., and earned a degree in International Relations.

After serving as an interpreter at the 1970 World's Fair in Osaka, Japan, Joel moved to the island of Guam and became a tennis instructor, as well as picking up frequent interpreting jobs for Japanese film crews on the island. He frequently returned to Japan, specifically Lake Nojiri, where the Aamodts had a summer cabin along with many other missionary families.

Later on, Joel moved back to Huron, S.D., where his folks had retired, and became a caretaker for both his parents.

He continued to be active in tennis instruction and hosted many friends who were traveling to the States.

Joel was a friend to all, even those who didn't know him. His laid-back personality matched his "living in the moment" philosophy. His love for music, art, photography, tennis, people, all things Japanese, and family brought him much joy.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents, Connie and Vavi. He is survived by his brothers Kim (Linda) Aamodt and Dean (Judy) Aamodt, niece Brie Aamodt, and nephews Jordan and Nelson Aamodt.
