The family of Dr. Francis Gary Florey, beloved longtime University of Wisconsin-Superior mathematics professor and Faculty Emeritus, announces his passing on July 20, 2026 at the age of 90.
Francis was born on March 26, 1936 in Pingree, N.D. and grew up on family farms near Henry and Clark, S.D. He devoted his life to education, earning a Ph.D. in Mathematics and serving on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Superior for 31 years. He was the author of Elementary Linear Algebra with Applications and directed a National Science Foundation educational program for 10 years, inspiring generations of students through is love of teaching and learning.
More than his professional accomplishments, Francis will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher, mentor, outdoorsman and faithful servant of God. He loved fishing, racquetball, sports and spending time with his family, and his kindness, humility and unwavering faith touched countless lives.
Francis is survived by his loving wife, Ardys Fischer; his brother, Fay Florey; his sons, Kevin Florey (Beth) and Todd Florey (Sandy); his daughter, Pam Porter; his cherished grandchildren, Cody Faga, Suzanne Keuhn (Bryan), Christina Bass (Nick), Michael Florey and Michelle Florey; his treasure great-grandchildren, Ivy Keuhn, Lily Keuhn, Rosalie Keuhn, Levi Bass, Silas Bass and Gabriel Bass; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Maxine; his brother, Floyd; his sister, Fern; his sister-in-law, Ila Mae; and his son-in-law, Jerry Porter.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church, 1708 John Avenue, Superior, Wisc., followed by a funeral service at 3:00 p.m. A meal and fellowship will follow. Memorials may be directed to the University of Wisconsin-Superior, Concordia Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
